At times, it feels as if there are two per square foot.  Since visitors frequently feed the squirrels, they have become bold.  When I visited Thursday morning, one came up, grabbed my leg with its paws, and then moved a couple feet away, staring at me.  Among all the gray squirrels, though, one stood out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq1.jpg\" alt=\"White squirrel bounding with a peanut.\" width=\"800\" height=\"426\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq1-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq1-768x409.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThis is a white morph of the Eastern gray squirrel (<i>Sciurus carolinensis<\/i>).  According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.untamedscience.com\/biodiversity\/white-squirrel\/\">Untamed Science<\/a>, it is a rare, naturally occurring trait.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq2.jpg\" alt=\"White squirrel with a peanut.\" width=\"800\" height=\"567\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq2-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq2-768x544.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The squirrel is not an albino, because it does produce some pigment.  It has black eyes, for instance, rather the the red eyes one would expect of an albino.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq3.jpg\" alt=\"White squirrel with a peanut.\" width=\"800\" height=\"579\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq3-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sq3-768x556.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The earliest mention I can find of this squirrel is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/boston\/comments\/3qf6c8\/saw_a_white_squirrel_in_the_public_garden_this\/\">reddit<\/a> on October 27 of last year.  A photo appears on a <a href=\"http:\/\/yourshot.nationalgeographic.com\/photos\/7225765\/\">National Geographic<\/a> site.  And also on <a href=\"https:\/\/deborahsimmerman.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/09\/squirrels-in-the-public-garden\/\">Deborah&#8217;s blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, there are multiple white squirrels nearby at Massachusetts General Hospital.
