I saw a couple of butterflies for the first time, among them a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/butterflyatlas\/index.php?id=117\">common sootywing<\/a> (<i>Pholisora catullus<\/i>), a dark brown butterfly with white spots.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_976\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_976\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/01_common_sootywing.jpg\" alt=\"Common sootywing\" width=\"800\" height=\"528\" class=\"size-full wp-image-976\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/01_common_sootywing.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/01_common_sootywing-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Common sootywing<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I had seen a <a href=\"http:\/\/spicebush.blogspot.com\/2010\/07\/pearl-crescent.html\">pearl crescent<\/a> (<i>Phyciodes tharos<\/i>) earlier in the year on white clover (<i>Trifolium repens<\/i>). A specimen in the shrub garden, <i>Clethra alnifolia<\/i> &#8216;Hummingbird&#8217; x &#8216;Anne Bidwell&#8217; (accession 326-2006*A), was swamped by pollinators.  This plant is also known as a pepperbush; its dry fruit look like peppercorns (see top left of photo below).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_981\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_981\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/06_summersweet.jpg\" alt=\"Summersweet fruit and flowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"537\" class=\"size-full wp-image-981\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/06_summersweet.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/06_summersweet-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Summersweet fruit and flowers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the insects drawn to the summersweet was this <a href=\"http:\/\/bugeric.blogspot.com\/2013\/01\/wasp-wednesday-great-black-wasp.html\">great black wasp<\/a> (<i>Sphex pensylvanicus<\/i>), which feeds its larvae paralyzed katydids. When I inched up close to check it out, it turned out to be a grasshopper.  David Ferguson identified it for me on BugGuide as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sidney.ars.usda.gov\/grasshopper\/ID_Tools\/F_Sheets\/carolina.htm\">Carolina grasshopper<\/a> (<i>Dissosteira carolina<\/i>).  It has some yellow near the tip of its wings, and a crest on its shoulder pads that has an elevated line running right through the middle.
