A green caterpillar with an opaque, lighter green face, it is covered with white dots. A number of white oaks are growing near where I found it.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the white dots, these caterpillars also have orange\/red dots on the lower end of each segment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_906\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_906\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/02_caterpillar2.jpg\" alt=\"white-dotted prominent caterpillar\" width=\"800\" height=\"529\" class=\"size-full wp-image-906\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/02_caterpillar2.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/02_caterpillar2-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">white-dotted prominent caterpillar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A flock of American goldfinches was all over the cup plants (<i>Silphium perfoliatum<\/i>) near the meadow.  Male goldfinches are easily recognizable with their yellow and black wings, black foreheads, and orange bills. Fragrant pink summersweet (<i>Clethra alnifolia<\/i> &#8216;Rosea&#8217;) and the scholar tree (<i>Styphnolobium japonicum<\/i>) were notable exceptions.
