On a sunny evening, we walked across the road to the Jones River Salt Marsh to look for birds.  The tide had come in and the larger birds that we hadn&#8217;t seen at low tide had returned.<\/p>\n<p>We saw a snowy egret with its snow-white feathers, dark bill, and yellow feet.  I had seen this bird on a California beach but this was my first time seeing it in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_880\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_880\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/01_snowy_egret.jpg\" alt=\"Snowy egret in flight\" width=\"800\" height=\"545\" class=\"size-full wp-image-880\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/01_snowy_egret.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/01_snowy_egret-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snowy egret<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I saw four species for the first time in this salt marsh.  A great egret stood stock still just out of water.  This bird is larger than the snowy egret, but has a yellow bill and dark legs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_881\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_881\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/02_great_egret.jpg\" alt=\"Great egret\" width=\"800\" height=\"542\" class=\"size-full wp-image-881\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/02_great_egret.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/02_great_egret-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great egret<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few lesser yellowlegs were wading in the water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_882\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_882\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 778px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/03_yellowlegs.jpg\" alt=\"Lesser yellowlegs wading\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" class=\"size-full wp-image-882\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/03_yellowlegs.jpg 768w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/03_yellowlegs-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lesser yellowlegs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The third and fourth species were both &#8220;semipalmated,&#8221; meaning that they have reduced webbing between their toes, helpful for wading.
