{"id":29,"date":"2011-11-02T22:41:52","date_gmt":"2011-11-03T02:41:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/?p=29"},"modified":"2013-06-01T01:27:20","modified_gmt":"2013-06-01T05:27:20","slug":"occupy-boston-and-police-overtime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/occupy-boston-and-police-overtime\/","title":{"rendered":"Occupy Boston and Police Overtime"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_30\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_30\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 261px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30\" title=\"2011_11_02_occupy_cameras\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2011_11_02_occupy_cameras.jpg\" alt=\"Five security cameras overlooking Occupy Boston\" width=\"251\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2011_11_02_occupy_cameras.jpg 251w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2011_11_02_occupy_cameras-188x300.jpg 188w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_30\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Security cameras on the service building overlooking the Occupy Boston encampment in Dewey Square<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mayor Menino has said that the Occupy Boston protests are costing the city too much money in police overtime.\u00a0 City Council President Stephen Murphy went so far as to peg that cost at $2 million a month, <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/special\/2011\/10\/14\/343541\/fact-check-city-council-president-stephen-murphy-conjures-2-million-cost-for-occupy-boston\/\">a number he made up<\/a>.\u00a0 But why is the city spending so much money on police in the first place?<\/p>\n<p>Four or five officers are assigned to stand duty in Dewey Square around the clock.\u00a0 But for what?\u00a0 Unless the protesters are marching, there have been no security issues which necessitate such a presence.\u00a0 One of the officers even admitted to <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.boston.com\/2011-10-22\/news\/30311032_1_demonstrators-officers-and-protesters-boston-police-officers\">getting a little bored.<\/a>  If problems arise, the 911 emergency system can function in Dewey Square and its surroundings just as it functions in the rest of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, the encampment is surrounded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.privacysos.org\/map\">more than a dozen security cameras<\/a>, cameras which the police have said they will use:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Police will employ the use of video-cameras in areas surrounding the Rose Kennedy Greenway. The video will be used to capture the images of individuals who are engaging in disorder.
