From a distance, the branches appear to blush and that is all. I saw some Siberian squill (<i>Scilla siberica<\/i>) underneath the redwoods, nodding their blue flower-heads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_284\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_284\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_scilla.jpg\" alt=\"Siberian squill flowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" class=\"size-full wp-image-284\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_scilla.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_scilla-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Siberian squill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Closer to the wet ground were Japanese butterbur (<i>Petasites japonicus<\/i>) which looked like little cabbages carrying bouquets of star-shaped, white flowers.  The plants are small now but the leaves will eventually grow to be rhubarb-size.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_282\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_282\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_butterbur_japanese.jpg\" alt=\"Japanese butterbur flowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"556\" class=\"size-full wp-image-282\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_butterbur_japanese.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_butterbur_japanese-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_282\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Japanese butterbur<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I found a European relative of the Japanese butterbur, common butterbur (<i>Petasites hybridus<\/i>), growing in the swamp proper.  The flower-heads look like they belong on a coral reef.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_281\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_281\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_butterbur_common.jpg\" alt=\"Common butterbur\" width=\"800\" height=\"477\" class=\"size-full wp-image-281\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_butterbur_common.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013_04_09_butterbur_common-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Common butterbur<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And, finally, some bright-looking flowers that reflected the strong afternoon sun: lesser celandine (<i>Ranunculus ficaria<\/i>).
