Judging from the forecast, spring has finally arrived and the plants at the Arboretum are starting to show it.  The flower buds of red maples are ready to burst.  Snowdrops are the only form of snow left in the area. The flowers have been through a wild swing in temperature, and continue to hold strong.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1359\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_1359\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/witch_hazel.jpg\" alt=\"Yellow witch-hazel flowers against a blue sky\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1359\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/witch_hazel.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/witch_hazel-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_1359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flowers of witch-hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia &#8216;Arnold Promise&#8217; 195-2005*B)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Those witch-hazel flowers had attracted a few flies and this European honey bee (<i>Apis mellifera<\/i>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1356\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_1356\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/honey_bee.jpg\" alt=\"European honey bee feeding on a witch-hazel flower\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/honey_bee.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/honey_bee-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_1356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">European honey bee feeding on a witch-hazel flower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Walking through the maple collection, I saw a number of another type of bee, which <strike>I believe is the cellophane bee<\/strike> is the mining bee <i>Andrena frigida<\/i> (thanks to John Ascher on bugguide for the ID).  These bees were flying low to the ground and also up around the trunks of maple trees.  They would land on the leaf litter or a trunk, only to be chased by another of its species.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1354\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_1354\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/cellophane_bee.jpg\" alt=\"Cellophane bee\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1354\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/cellophane_bee.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/cellophane_bee-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_1354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cellophane bee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, back in the meadow area, I stumbled upon this orange-and-black picnic beetle with its puzzle-piece coating.  This is a picnic beetle (<i>Glischrochilus fasciatus<\/i>), a type of sap-feeding beetle.  According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extension.iastate.edu\/newsrel\/1999\/jul99\/jul9914.html\">Iowa State University Extension<\/a>, these beetles feed on fermenting plant juices, and are attracted to ripe, damaged, or cracked produce.
