Turned out to be this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildlife.state.nh.us\/Wildlife\/Nongame\/snakes\/profile_garter_snake.htm\">garter snake<\/a> (<i>Thamnophis sirtalis<\/i>), a skinny fellow who was quite afraid of me.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1124\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_1124\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/01_snake.jpg\" alt=\"Garter snake looking at the camera\" width=\"800\" height=\"377\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1124\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/01_snake.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/01_snake-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_1124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Garter snake<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThese snakes have yellow and black stripes, a red and black tongue, and usually yellow dots on top of their head. This is the red-banded or <a href=\"http:\/\/www4.uwm.edu\/fieldstation\/naturalhistory\/bugoftheweek\/candystripedleafhopper.cfm\">candy-striped leafhopper<\/a> (<i>Graphocephala coccinea<\/i>). I saw this black flea beetle (<i>Epitrix<\/i>) on the plant.  Members of this genus are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fera.defra.gov.uk\/plants\/plantHealth\/pestsDiseases\/epitrix.cfm\">pests on potato plants<\/a>; black nightshade is in the potato family. The fruit is wrinkled on the surface just like the human brain. The epaulette tree (<i>Pterostyrax hispidus<\/i>) is one of them. I think this is another clover looper, but its markings aren&#8217;t as distinct as the last clover looper that I saw.
