We counted 45 double-crested cormorants near the island&#8217;s shores.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1100\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_1100\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/01_cormorants.jpg\" alt=\"Double-crested cormorants\" width=\"800\" height=\"459\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1100\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/01_cormorants.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/01_cormorants-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_1100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Double-crested cormorants<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A large flock of tree swallows were flying near the top of the south drumlin, at least 150 of them, if not many more.  This is not unusual; large flocks have been reported around Boston Harbor on e-bird.  On September 4, 2011, Matthew Garvey <a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/view\/checklist?subID=S8763840\">reported a flock of 2000<\/a> tree swallows in and around Deer Island.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1101\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_1101\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/02_swallows_flock.jpg\" alt=\"Flock of tree swallows on Spectacle Island\" width=\"800\" height=\"299\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1101\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/02_swallows_flock.jpg 800w, http:\/\/sicloot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/02_swallows_flock-300x112.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_1101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flock of tree swallows<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/tree_swallow\/lifehistory\">All About Birds<\/a> site, eastern populations of tree swallows probably migrate along the Atlantic coast to winter in Florida and Central America. This one was flying with what looks like a crab in its mouth. The ones we saw were in winter plumage, exchanging their black hoods and red bills for white and gray heads with black bills.
